Principal Dealing Desks vs Electronic Order-Book Trading

Compare principal physical-metals dealing with electronic order-book trading and understand why counterparty structure matters in physical settlement.
Physical Trading, Settlement, Delivery & Logistics
Not every market transaction uses the same structure.
Some markets operate through electronic order books that match buyers and sellers. A physical precious-metals principal desk follows a different model: the desk itself acts as the counterparty to the transaction.
Understanding this distinction helps explain why pricing, inventory and settlement work differently in physical bullion.

What is an order book?

An electronic order book organizes buying and selling interest from multiple participants.
Buyers place bids. Sellers place offers. The system can match orders when compatible prices and quantities are available.
The platform operating the system does not necessarily become the economic counterparty to every trade.
Its role may primarily involve bringing market participants together and providing the infrastructure through which their orders interact.
This type of structure is common in many financial markets.

What is a principal dealing desk?

A principal desk is different.
When a principal quotes a client, the dealer itself is offering to transact.
If the client buys metal, the desk sells it under the agreed terms. If the client sells metal, the desk buys it.
Alloy Capital Commodities describes its model directly: the company is the counterparty rather than an intermediary platform.
That means the physical desk's quote is connected to its ability to provide, acquire or manage the corresponding metal.
If the client accepts the firm quote within its validity period, the parties have agreed on the core economics of the transaction.

Why inventory matters

An order-book trade can focus primarily on matching market interest.
A physical principal transaction must also consider the asset that will settle the trade.
If the desk offers a specific kilogram gold bar or one-ounce platinum product, the physical product has to be available within the inventory or sourcing process.
The desk therefore considers not only market price but also physical availability, product form and settlement requirements.

Firm two-way pricing

A principal dealing desk may quote both a bid and an offer.
The bid represents the price at which it is prepared to buy.
The offer represents the price at which it is prepared to sell.
Because the desk is quoting its own willingness to transact, that two-way price reflects both market conditions and its physical inventory considerations.
Once accepted within the quote-validity period, the transaction moves into the desk's settlement process.

Counterparty structure changes the workflow

The distinction becomes clearer after the price is agreed.
With physical principal dealing, the relationship is direct:
Client ↔ Principal desk
The desk is responsible for satisfying its side of the transaction according to the agreed settlement terms.
That can involve receiving funds, allocating metal, issuing documentation and arranging custody or delivery.
The counterparty is therefore directly connected to the physical settlement chain.

Why this distinction matters educationally

The point is not that one market structure is universally better than another.
They are different mechanisms designed for different forms of trading.
An electronic order book can be highly efficient for standardized financial instruments.
A principal physical-metals desk is designed around direct counterparty pricing and actual bullion settlement.
For Alloy Academy learners, the important question is:
Who is responsible for delivering the asset that satisfies the transaction?
In a physical principal model, the answer is clear: the dealer quoting the transaction is also the commercial counterparty expected to settle it.
That connection between quote, counterparty and physical metal is one of the defining features of the operating model.

Commercial pricing comes from the desk.
