Common Educational Questions
Is the spot price the price of a physical bar?
Not necessarily. Spot is a reference for the underlying metal. Physical products can trade above or below that reference depending on the transaction and prevailing physical-market conditions.
Why can two gold products have different premiums?
Fabrication, product format, size, availability and market demand can differ even when both products contain gold.
Is allocated storage the same as pooled storage?
No. Allocated custody is based on identified metal attributed to a client holding. Pooled structures generally represent a claim against shared inventory.
Why do serial numbers matter?
For products that carry them, serial numbers help identify individual pieces of metal and support inventory reconciliation.
Why is metal assayed?
Assay helps verify composition or purity, particularly when metal does not come with a trusted or sufficient chain of identification.
Can stored metal be physically withdrawn?
That depends on the custody agreement. Alloy Capital Commodities states that its allocated holdings can be withdrawn subject to its stated notice and delivery procedures.
Why do dealers quote both bid and offer prices?
A dealer may be willing both to buy and sell metal. The two prices reflect the respective sides of that market.
